For nearly ten years, Guy Tournellec, a garden specialist, has been providing gardening training to individuals and businesses. After 25 years in mass distribution, he embarked on a career as a trainer. We could also find him during the open house of SNHF, Société Nationale d'Horticulture de France, on September 21, 2013. In the meantime, he gives us his advice and tips for beautifying his garden.

Can you tell us about your background?

I started as an apprentice many years ago then I traveled across Europe to learn in the field: working with beautiful trees, fruits, flowers ... Then I collaborated for 25 years with the distribution at Truffaut and in agricultural cooperatives. Now for 8 years I have been an independent trainer. I had always wanted to and then finally I started. I have always tried to share my passion. It is a pleasure to succeed in reconciling your professional life and your passion.

What is the secret of a beautiful garden?

First of all, you have to know your exposure and temperatures well, where are the hot and cold places in the garden. We can sometimes note deviations of 5 degrees between the different places in the garden. It is then necessary to draw up what is called a plan of the living rooms of your garden. Then you have to know the soil in which you are going to plant. You have to prepare it. You can buy the most beautiful plant in the world, if it does not like where it is placed, it will not grow properly. Of course, feeding and caring are basic rules to perform after a soil test.

Are there any tips to beautify your garden?

The functioning of the soil follows many rules. You have to prepare your soil well before anything else. The amateur gardener often confuses compost and potting soil, be careful to find out. A population of earthworms can dig up to 4 kilometers of galleries in a soil and thanks to this, there will be circulation of water, air and elements necessary for a beautiful garden. Thanks to good soil, there will be less need to protect and care for your plants, since they will be in good health. These are "alternative techniques".

Last summer, what remains to do?

It is necessary to clean to prepare the harvest: we remove the dead plants of tomatoes, zucchini, cucumbers ... And we replant salads and other lettuces that we will harvest during the winter. If you do not want to take care of your garden during the winter, you should not however leave it "naked": you must sow a green manure, which will protect the soil and prepare it for the next season. For the ornamental garden, it is necessary to collect the falling leaves, since this is where the fungi and insects settle. Finally, we think of installing shelters for birds, hedgehogs and other insects which will ensure the good behavior of the garden for you!

What are the essential gestures in the garden?

So you have to know your soil and the different living rooms. As a consumer, if you are lost, do not hesitate to seek advice from the sellers who are there for that. I also invite you to consult sites like www.jardiner-autrement.fr which is an institutional site for the whole profession, which summarizes the basic gestures to know.
